Prof. Diego Marconi

Diego Marconi was born in Torino in 1947. He graduated under Luigi Pareyson in 1969, writing a thesis on Wittgenstein. At that time, he shared the existential-hermeneutic orientation of Pareyson’s philosophy. Later, he did graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh with Nicholas Rescher, Wilfrid Sellars, Richmond H.Thomason and others. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis (1979) on Hegel. The thesis was an attempt at tracing the origin of so called "dialectical contradictions" in Hegel’s use of language. Afterwards, Marconi has been working within analytic philosophy, which he conceives not as a doctrinal body but as a philosophical style. He wrote or edited four books on Wittgenstein (1971, 1987, 1988, 1997), edited a reader on the formalization of Hegelian dialectics (1979), and published many articles in logic and philosophy of language.

In the last few years he has been working mostly on lexical meaning, writing a short book (Dizionari e enciclopedie, 1982, 1986(2)) on the alleged distinction between linguistic knowledge and world knowledge, and several articles on lexical semantic competence, i.e. on our knowledge of the meaning of words. A book on this topic (Lexical Competence) was published in 1997 by MIT Press. He is also the author of Filosofia e scienza cognitiva (2001). A short book on truth and relativism will be published in 1997 by Einaudi.

He was a co- editor of the new edition of Dizionario Palazzi-Folena della lingua italiana (1986-1992) and the 1993 edition of the Garzanti Encyclopedia of Philosophy. He was a founding member of the European Society for Analytic Philosophy (ESAP) and has been President of the Italian society for analytic philosophy (1996-98). He is co-editor of the journal Sistemi Intelligenti and  a member of the editorial boards of European Journal of Philosophy, Dialectica, and Iride.
